Your Newcastle Dentist – Electric v Manual Toothbrushes

One of the most common questions we are asked here at your Newcastle dentist is whether electric toothbrushes are a better option than manual toothbrushes.

With correct brushing technique optimal results can be achieved with both, according to Liz Hughes, our resident hygienist.  The right brushing technique achieves a perfect balance between getting the toothbrush close to the gum so you remove all the plaque from the gum line, without pressing too hard and causing damage to the teeth and gums.  It’s this difficulty in achieving the perfect balance that may mean some people are better off using an electric toothbrush.

Meanwhile, an electric toothbrush designed for children with colourful pictures and music can make it easier to get kids brushing their teeth.  People with arthritis in their hands or other disabilities may also find it easier to hold an electric toothbrush because they have a bigger handle than manual ones.  No matter which toothbrush you choose, the rules for maintaining oral hygiene are the same and brushing technique will always be of the utmost importance.

Here are some top tips to bear in mind when looking after your teeth:

  • Always choose a soft bristle toothbrush rather than a hard or medium brush.
  • Clean your teeth in the morning after breakfast and before you go to bed at night.
  • Replace both manual and electric toothbrush heads every three months.
  • Don’t underestimate the importance of flossing to remove plaque from between your teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach.
  • Cleaning your tongue is also an important habit to remove plaque that is full of bacteria and can cause of bad breath.

As part of your regular dental maintenance visit here at your Newcastle dentist, Liz always offers advice and instruction on correct brushing technique to ensure our patients are looking after their teeth and gums as best they can at home.  Give us a call on 4926 2553 to arrange an appointment today!
